2016 is the 10th anniversary of entry into force of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in China. According to the survey of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, public awareness of the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke has increased.
The public (smokers included) highly support the Smoke Free Policy. But at present, China’s tobacco epidemic is still grim, the harm is still serious. According to statistics, in the past ten years, the number of people killed by tobacco reached about 11 million in China. In the worldwide, the tobacco epidemic is one of the greatest public health threats that humanity has ever faced. Nearly 6 million people lost their lives every year, of which 5 million due to the direct use of tobacco, and about 60 thousand are victims of secondhand smoke.
Tobacco smoke contains more than 7000 kinds of chemical substances, including toxic and carcinogenic that cause smoking addiction. It can damage each organ system of the body via several means, such as DNA damage and inflammation irritation. Smoking can cause lung cancer and other malignant tumors. It can also lead to various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease, cerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral infarction.
For men, long-term smoking can cause testicular damage that made sperm degeneration and cause male sexual dysfunction and other diseases.
Female smoking can cause menstrual men, long estrogen and early menopause. It will increase the incidence risk of some diseases such as coronary heart disease.
Smoking during Pregnancy can cause fetal health impairment and developmental disorders.
Smoking is not only harmful to themselves, but also to the health of others. Scientific all over the world thought tens of thousands of researches proved that, on-smokers after passive exposure to second-hand smoke, the risk of coronary heart disease increased 25%-30%. The risk of lung cancer increased 20%-30%.
In order to prevent the hazards of secondhand smoke, WHO pointed out that, the implementation of the "100% smoke-free environment" is the only effectively means to protect people. After stopped smoking, nicotine in the blood starts to drop immediately. Compare to the continuing smoking, one year after stop smoking, the risk of heart attack reduced to 50%.5 years after quitting, the risk is no different in stroke mortality; the risk of oral cancer, pharyngeal cancer incidence decreased by 50%.15 years after quitting smoking, the damage of smoking will no longer exist.
UIC is a smoke-free university and has a "smoke free campus" code, all areas within the school are non-smoking areas. All teachers, students and visitors are not allowed to smoke in the campus. Students who violate the rules will be punished by the student disciplinary committee. Staffs that violate the rules will be punished by the relevant departments. If visitors smoke in the campus and do not listen to dissuade, will be asked to leave the school area.
Everyone in UIC has the right to ask others to stop smoking on campus. In order to ensure that all people in the UIC campus free from direct or indirect impact of tobacco smoking free campaign work-group initiative: care for health, refuse second-hand smoke. Please act together to achieve UIC new smoke-free environment.
